So tomorrow, March 11th, marks Strut's one year anniversary. We're super excited to have been so enthusiastically embraced by the Phoenix community. Heck, all of Arizona. Well, really, the whole country, since brides have flown in from all parts. Anyway, we want to say thanks. Give back. Help others. And we want to help the curvy girl community.
So we're holding a plus size clothing drive in the Phoenix store from March 15-31st. The clothes will go to Arizona Women's Education and Employment (AWEE) clothing boutique. You see, under- and unemployed local women can choose 2-3 FREE interview outfits to help them get back on their feet. And these free outfits can help them get through their few weeks of a new job. Not everyone is lucky enough to wear whatever they want to work! (Cough–don't tell Bob about our jeans!)
When we proposed the idea to the AWEE folks we think we might have heard a few tears in those words of gratitude. You see, they always need plus size clothes and seldom have enough, so they often have to turn away women who need their help. And that breaks our hearts.
New and gently used plus size clothing items to be collected include:
- Skirts, slacks and khakis
- Blouses, sweaters and jackets
- Accessories, including shoes, belts, purses and jewelry.
Please, no jeans and t-shirts. And only gently worn. You can bring clean clothes in bags, boxes or on hangars. In return, you'll get our undying thanks and a receipt for tax purposes.
We know these are hard times for a lot of folks. Check out the stats on the folks AWEE helps:
- 69% are women and 31% are men
- 46% are minorities
- 29% are educated above the high school/GED level
- 27% are separated, divorced or widowed
- 49% have children ages 13 or under
- 4% are homeless and 2% are veterans
- 37% have experienced domestic violence
- 18% are

Too bad I missed out on this, but what an awesome idea. I hope you were able to collect lots of clothes!

Susan, we hope to do it once a year to celebrate our anniversary, so look for it again next year. Also, they’re always accepting donations throughout the year!

If they accept donations all year round I’ll have to talk to my girlfriends about getting together some clothing to donate.
Big Girls Rock says
Every 6 months my daughter and I take a Saturday and clean out our closets. What we do not want to wear anymore we take to women’s shelters. Because we are larger than most women, they always welcome our plus size clothing!
